Key pattern

Alternate leaves usually with stipules at the leaf-stalk base; regular, five-petalled flowers ring a cup-shaped floral tube (hypanthium) fusing the sepals, petals, and numerous stamens at their base around — but not to — the ovary, ripening into fruit as different as a pome, drupe, or dry achene cluster.

The cup-shaped hypanthium is what becomes the fleshy edible part of an apple or rose hip — the true dry carpels are hidden inside it, not the flesh most people picture as 'the fruit'.
