Nature doesn’t always cooperate with a camera lens. Here are the scanning tips and troubleshooting notes to help your hardware cut through the noise and bring the botany into focus.
How to scan a plant

01 / Find good light
Bright daylight. Zero glare.
Natural, diffuse daylight or a bright indoor spot helps the camera see the details. Avoid harsh shadows across leaf patterns and direct glare that washes them out.
02 / Isolate your target
Focus on the rebel, not the crowd.
Open the scanner and centre one clear leaf, flower or grass head in the frame. A chaotic crowd makes the details harder to read. Move closer or change your angle to simplify the background, keeping the whole feature in view.
03 / Check your alignment
Parallel positioning.
Hold your phone steady and, for a leaf, face its surface rather than looking along the edge. Let the lens focus before you capture. Give the model a clear view of the shape, veins and other visible field marks.
Then follow the field marks. Review the suggested matches against the plant in front of you. If the details don’t fit, try a different feature or angle. Save a discovery to revisit its profile and local names.
