Broad, flattened, often yew-like leaves quite unlike the narrow needles of most conifers; reproduction is by seeds sitting singly atop a swollen, brightly coloured, fleshy stalk that mimics a berry rather than by a typical woody cone.
As a true conifer this family has no flowers or fruit — the fleshy, berry-like structure beneath each seed is actually a swollen stalk, not a fruit wall, despite looking sweet enough to attract fruit-eating birds.
