Alternate, often stiff and boldly ribbed leaves with numerous straight parallel side veins running to the margin, on trees and climbers; regular flowers show numerous separate stamens and carpels around a rugged, often persistent fleshy calyx that continues to enclose the ripening fruit.
The stiff, sandpaper-textured leaves with sharply parallel ribbing were historically used, quite literally, to sand and polish wood and metal in parts of South and Southeast Asia.
